The peaceful areas I’d recommend for a stay in Sarnath
Sarnath was a pleasant surprise to me. I assumed it would have a character similar to that of Varanasi, due to its proximity of just 10 kilometres. However, I found it to be a beautiful Buddhist village with its most prominent sound being the wind blowing through the trees of Deer Park. My choice of accommodation had a huge impact on my experience in Sarnath.
After staying in the area for three days, I was able to identify several places of peace and tranquillity that do not allow the incoming tourists to disturb their serene surroundings.
Stay near the Deer Park in Sarnath
I spent my first two nights in the area just a walking distance from Deer Park, where Buddha gave his first public speech after his enlightenment experience. Everything seems to move here in a slow and precise way.

Monks dressed in orange and maroon clothes are moving from one monastery to another during the day, making the atmosphere seem peaceful. Evening walks here became my favourite ritual. The area empties after sunset, leaving just soft temple bells and distant chanting from nearby monasteries.
Around the Thai Temple complex in Sarnath
A different kind of peace exists near Wat Thai Sarnath, the Thai-style Buddhist temple with its golden Buddha statue. The vast expanse of land with abundant greenery invites people to sit and observe rather than hurry through it. I spent one afternoon in these areas and patiently waited while the clouds passed and changed the posture of the statue.
The nearby accommodation comprises mostly modern Buddhist guesthouses which are either operated by monasteries or follow the principles of Buddhism. These guesthouses maintain their own order and sometimes organise optional meditation classes. However, it is silent. The silence is completely different from the one in Deer Park.
Sarnath’s Chaukhandi Stupa neighbourhood
Fewer visitors make it to this area, which is one of the reasons why I enjoyed it so much. The Chaukhandi Stupa is the place where the Buddha first met his disciples, and the territory around it is authentic residential. The local families and shops attract attention with their simplicity of life that proceeds regardless of the tourist rush.
When doing hotel booking online, I nearly skipped the region because it is not usually included in the list of places to visit in Sarnath. That turned out to be its most significant advantage, since mornings spent there allowed me to watch the locals live their normal lives without being disturbed by tourists.
Why Sarnath feels so different from Varanasi?
During my time in Sarnath, what stuck with me was how noticeable the change in atmosphere was from Varanasi, which was not far away. Where one encounters nonstop horns, heavy crowds in the ghats, and bustling markets in Varanasi, Sarnath’s environment is dominated by trees, monasteries’ walls, and open spaces where quietness comes easily. Consequently, I found myself taking things easier without even trying. Cafés, temples, and guesthouses all seemed to be operating at a slow pace in Sarnath.
Tips for choosing accommodation in Sarnath
Before booking, I’d recommend checking whether your accommodation is within walking distance of Deer Park or one of the major monasteries. Many properties advertise themselves as being “near Sarnath,” but some are actually closer to the busy highway leading to Varanasi.

Reading recent guest reviews can also help you identify quieter locations. Since most hotels and guesthouses are small, it’s worth looking for places with gardens or open courtyards if you enjoy spending peaceful evenings outdoors. I also found that staying slightly away from the main commercial stretch made the overall experience far more relaxing.
What made the difference?
Choosing accommodation away from the main road connecting Sarnath to Varanasi mattered enormously. That road carries constant traffic noise that breaks the spell Sarnath otherwise creates. The pockets I’ve mentioned all sit slightly removed from this main road.
Most properties here stay small-scale, with nothing resembling large hotel chains. This works in favour of the peaceful surroundings everyone seeks when visiting. Rooms are simple, but that seems appropriate for a place built around Buddhist teachings on non-attachment.
Final thoughts
The experience in Sarnath will only be fruitful for those who prefer peace to comfort. Being enveloped by quieter spots will allow one to savour the town, rather than getting hurriedly through its attractions in connection with a day trip to Varanasi. It is recommended to spend at least two nights there, however, as the sensation is not so easy to pick up.
It is also important to note that there’s much more to using accommodation than just sleeping over there. In Sarnath, your place of stay will determine the way you perceive the rhythm of your trip. The experience of getting up at the soothing sound of birds singing, visiting ancient Buddhist temples before swarming tourists, and hearing the bells at the end of the day is not something that can be repeated anywhere else. My favourite memories of Sarnath appeared to be the ones when I stayed there.
