one thing Ive noticed about older versions (well, ver.7 anyway) of photoshop that if youre in windows explorer (viewing a folder with psd files in it) you can see a preview of the file in the folder without having to open the file to see what it contains - with CS3 each file shows up as a default blue PS icon like this

before anyone says "google is your friend" yes I tried to find a solution on my own, and got this

The solution is very simple and takes less than a minute to implement. You don't need to even reboot Windows. The change is immediate.

1. Download the file, photoshop_thumbnails.zip (62kb)
2. Copy psicon.dll to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell - if this folder doesn't exist create it
3. Run Adobe.reg
4. You now can view PSD files in Thumbnails view within Windows Explorer.

unfortunately I followed those directions and it changed nothing - I still see the blue icon. I dont really want to install 3rd party software just to view preview of my photoshop file... what can I do?

I have the same issue. If you use the File » Open dialog box in PS, when you single-click on a file, the preview does show up in the little preview area at the bottom. That's been my only saving grace.

That and the fact that my organization and naming conventions dictate that I rarely have more than five psds in any single folder at any point.
