Full Version: Fantasy Investing (Starts May 12)
That's Just Not Right! > Sampson's Circlejerk > TJNR Competitions
Matt
CNBC.com is sponsoring a fantasy trading contest. It's free. Just go sign up.

They are giving out weekly prizes for the best performing portfolios for each week starting May 12th. SOME GOOD SHIT TOO! If we get enough people from TJNR, I suggest we take a screenshot of our portfolios each week and see how we are doing compared to other perverts on here. Maybe we can talk Ted into sending the winner one of those imaginary TJNR tee shirts.

Any takers?
Ryanella
Signed up, have to wait to May 12th to start trading!

I'm in but what the hell am I supposed to name my portfolio(s)?

Are the names significant or just for the sake of a label?

That's just for the sake of a label. I named one of mine NASCAR. As an experiment, I'm going to populate it only with corporate sponsors of cars in NASCAR. I'm going to divide the 1M up evenly among them all. My theory is if a company has enough of an advertising budget to afford to sponsor a car, they must be doing pretty good.

I went all out while naming my first one.

6. Portfolios:

Each Participant may register and play up to five (5) different Portfolios in the Contest, each of which must be given a different name by the Participant, but which may have the same name as other Participants’ Portfolios. Portfolio names must not be inappropriate, as determined by CNBC or the Site’s support staff in their sole discretion. This includes, without limitation, names that are harmful, defamatory, racist, ethnically derogatory, obscene, vulgar, sexually explicit, profane or objectionable, whether in English or any other language, and including without limitation misspellings, alternative spellings, homonyms or word combinations of such names. If any Portfolio’s name is deemed by CNBC, in its sole discretion, to be inappropriate, the Participant who created the Portfolio and all such Participant’s Portfolios will be disqualified from the Contest. Once a Portfolio has been named, the name cannot be changed nor can a Portfolio be deleted or replaced with a new or different Portfolio.

Matt following and enforcing actual rules. That alone might be funny enough reason to join.

Matt
This starts today.

I filled up all 5 of my portfolios this morning. Apparently they purchases happen at the daily closing price of the stocks. I was hoping for delayed quote or real time pricing. Ah well.

Is there a place I can go online and punch in the four-letter stock symbol or search a particular field easily view stock performances over the past few days/weeks/months/years/decades ? ? ?

They have all that on the site. Click around, you'll find it.

I looked at the things on my desk, and figured that if I thought they were good enough to buy, everyone else should as well. HP, Sandisk, Western Digital, Circuit City, Marvel. Yeah, I'm probably going to go under.

I'm winning!
Matt
Each day they offer 2000 fantasy bucks (per question) for answering trivia questions relating to their TV shows and blogs. (Its a blatant attempt to get you to tune in.)

If you don't feel like looking them up you can just go here to find the daily answers.

You're welcome.

Seems like the portfolio section is down. I can register but that's about all.

It's pretty squirrely because of the high traffic. They had to close down the currency trading part.

Anyway, here's a screenshot of one of my portfolios today. Read em and weep.

I had a similar tactic...

Matt
I don't get it. In the portfolio named "Cloud 9" I made 48K the first day, but when I click the "Stocks" tab on the leader board it's not listed.

They hate me.

We'll see. I have a portfolio made up of miltary weapons and airplanes and medical developers, so we'll see how that goes.

My "Desk" Portfolio. Gaining about $30k a day. Hopefully it keeps that up.

My military portfolio is slightly disappointing. Today was it's first day in the market, so we'll see how thing go. Since congress just cut funding for Iraq, it'll probably tank.

No it's not. You won't have a shot at the overall prize. (Like any of us have a real chance anyway) But each week they keep track of the weekly leaders and give out nice prizes.

This is my best performing portfolio so far. It's only 90K away from making the leaderboard.

Matt
Here's my update if any of you are still playing this. This time I'll show you the stocks that are doing well for me.
Matt
Today they announced the winners and the stocks that they used to win with. I'm definitely going to put these on a watch list.
