LONDON - Prince Harry has been serving on the front line in Afghanistan with the British Army, calling in airstrikes on Taliban positions and going out on foot patrols, the Ministry of Defence announced Thursday.

Can you imagine the controversy that would errupt if something actually happened to him?

KVL
I think if something happened to him it would make people realize that the royals are not exempt from the rules of life and death when it comes to war. Hell, i commend them, you don't see any of the American presidential candidates having their kids serving over there. But there the royal family is, carrying on a long tradition of military service.
Clarissa
Doesn't seem they are too happy about the news getting out.

CNN:

QUOTE
British and international media -- including CNN -- had agreed not to report Harry's deployment because of security concerns for him and his unit. The military confirmed the operation after a U.S. Web site broke the news blackout.

Dannatt said: "What the last two months have shown is that it is perfectly possible for Prince Harry to be employed just the same as other Army officers of his rank and experience.

At least they sent him to the war that is justified.

The news embargo was broken, however, after reports of the prince's deployment were leaked by an Australian magazine and a German newspaper, and then reported on a U.S. website, the Drudge Report.

Of course it had to be Matt Drudge that broke it to the U.S.
Good job, royal-hater!

They should send prince Phillip, i bet he'd love to shoot some brown people
Wulf
He's third in line to a ceremonial monarchy. God forbid he is killed, someone else would have to be the Duke of Wherever. Let the kid fight.

Not surprisingly the decision has now been made to fetch him home ASAP.

Bullshit. I could see if he was a royal pansy on the frontlines, but honestly if he's doing a good job who shouldn't they let him stay? Kings used to go to the frontlines of battle ALL THE FUCKING TIME! Let alone the indirect heir to the defunct monarchy.

I swear this guy's got brass balls. To totally say "fuck you" to every person trying to hold him back.

Because he'll become a high-priority target for Al-Queida. And part of it is not just that he could get killed, it's that the soldiers around him could be taken out also... This is why they kept it a secret to begin with.

Oh, and as for Matt Drudge...

Matt Drudge expresses no regret for Prince Harry report

Matt Drudge does not do apologies and there was no sign today of any regret on his part for exposing the well-laid plans of the Ministry of Defence.

On his website, the Drudge Report, the man the Telegraph's US editor has described as "the world's most powerful journalist" revelled in the controversy he provoked by breaking the news blackout on Prince Harry's deployment.

Asshole.

A soldier standing next to a high priority target is in no more danger than a regular soldier. They are protecting a civilian, it's another soldier in camo and a helm. As long as they don't salute or treat him differently it isn't like they can pick him out frm the rest of the group that looks exactly the same.

The only thing this does is piss off Harry and weaken the moral of the frontlines. It's like taking out your star player if he gets his shoes dirty.

I don't disagree.

I also think he's a rock star for being so adamant about wanting to serve his country...

Segue time...
