This is a wonderful way to experience Card's best-known and most celebrated work, both for longtime fans and for newcomers.

Reader David Aaron Baker understands his character so well that he makes it easy to be completely drawn into Odd's world, in which his best friends are a morbidly obese mystery writer, a fatherly police chief, and the ghost of Elvis Presley. Baker's voice has an endearing gentle quality that perfectly suits the character. In the second Odd novel, an evil woman learns of his powers and will stop at nothing to exploit him. Murder is the least of her crimes.

I want to read more about him, especially after the teasing ending of his latest and greatest adventure, BROTHER ODD. Actor David Aaron Baker has performed all three "Odd" novels, and it's hard to imagine anyone else doing the fourth. Baker captures the gentleness of Odd; the benevolent sadness of his brilliant 400-pound friend, Oswald; and the confident and godly monks with whom Odd sought refuge after his girlfriend was murdered. The peculiar young man, whose mother meant to name him "Todd," sees demons called "bodocks," which swarm in places where death and destruction are imminent. It's up to Odd to figure out the impending danger and stop it.

Originally billed as the third Dirk Gently novel, in recent years, rumors began circulating that Adams was turning the book into a sixth Hitchhiker's novel. Long known for his preternatural ability to procrastinate, Adams died on 11 May 2001 before he could finish even the first draft of the book.
The most recent of Adams's long-suffering editors culled through numerous hard drives to recreate as much of the novel (eleven chapters) as Adams had written. Since this hardly is the making of a complete book, the editor added two of Adams's short stories and several autobiographical essays to the mix to produce a collection, with the long-awaited novel's title, which provides insight into Adams's life and concerns.

Standup comic George Carlin follows up his dark-horse smash bestseller Brain Droppings with another compendium of cranky meditations, cinching his reputation as the Andy Rooney of boomer hepcats. "Road rage, air rage," Carlin rails. "Why should I be forced to divide my rage into separate categories? To me, it's just one big, all-around, everyday rage. I don't have time for fine distinctions." Carlin is not into the lengthy essay--he's a sprinter of the mind. Most sentences in the book could be lifted out to stand alone and provoke deep thought: "How can it be a spy satellite if they announce on television that it's a spy satellite?" Good question. "Why do they bother saying 'Raw sewage'? Do some people cook that stuff?" Yuck, but yes, Carlin's got a point.

Condensing a 900-page text into a six-and-a-half–hour audiobook is no small challenge, but this production proves that it can be done—and done well. Inevitably, people will wonder what has been left out. The answer: anecdotes from Clinton's childhood; blow-by-blow accounts of his gubernatorial and presidential races; a plethora of details regarding his smaller accomplishments as president; and some blistering indictments of Kenneth Starr and other conservatives. What's left is a moving but all-too-brief portrait of Clinton's troubled childhood and an in-depth look at the battles he fought before and after being elected. It should come as no surprise to anyone who has heard Clinton speak that the former president narrates his autobiography with aplomb. His voice rings with mirth when he relates an amusing anecdote and expresses sadness when he describes how his abusive, alcoholic father faced death with more courage than he did life. Clinton covers the expected topics—Whitewater (a "bogus scandal"); his "immoral and foolish" dalliance with Monica Lewinsky; his attempts to balance the budget and bring peace to the Middle East—but the most illuminating details are the small ones (such as when he recalls, with a smile in his voice, impulsively buying a house and telling Hillary: "Remember that little house you liked so much? I bought it. You have to marry me now, because I can't live there alone"). Although not all of the transitions between topics are seamless and listeners may wish John McElroy, who created this abridgment, had included more details from Clinton's younger years, Clinton's legendary charisma shines through in his reading, making this audiobook a rare treat. Sardonic and mocking, Glaurung manipulated the fates of Turin and Nienor by lies of diabolic cunning and guile, and the curse of Morgoth was fulfilled. The earliest versions of this story by J.R.R. Tolkien go back to the end of the First World War and the years that followed; but long afterwards, when The Lord of the Rings was finished, he wrote it anew and greatly enlarged it in complexities of motive and character: it became the dominant story in his later work on Middle-earth. But he could not bring it to a final and finished form. In this book Christopher Tolkien has constructed, after long study of the manuscripts, a coherent narrative without any editorial invention.
