As the popularity of the music thread for linked albums has been spectacular, we have had requests to do something similar for audiobooks. Audiobooks are basically an MP3 file of a book. Great for long trips.

Request them, post them, listen to them.

Since I'm still an audiobook virgin, I'll start us off with a request.

Can anyone get this one?

I would love someone forever if they could find House of Leaves or Only Revolutions, especially since I'm going to a book signing for Only Revolutions on Monday and I feel like a cheater since I haven't read it yet...

The author might help... they're both by Mark Z. Danielewski.

Now for my "I'm a stupid girl" question. I downloaded The Cell from the rapidshare link Dean posted. I unzipped the file, but when I open the folders, I see files with an "AA" extension. I have no clue whatsoever how to make these files work!

HELP?

Both of them are the kind of books you really need to discover in book form, it's the whole experience of flipping through pages, flipping back, turning your book upside down and whatnot. I doubt they'll ever come out as audiobooks, it's definitely no Harry Potter.

I'm starting to listen to audiobooks when I travel for work ... which is pretty much every weekend so please folks keep em comming and if anyone has any Elmore Leonard or Dennis Lehane I would really appreciate it. I'm in a pulpy crime and detective story kinda mood this month.

Physically a narrow book, Bleachers is a modest fiction in many respects. The emotional scope is akin to that of a short story, with a single-minded focus on explorations of nostalgia and regret. The dialogue, especially that of Neely's friend Paul Curry, is sometimes wooden as characters recall Messina history in paragraphs that were perhaps better left to the narrator. But Grisham has otherwise written a well-made, entertaining--if a bit sentimental--story.

Wow!! The Amber Chronicles! These are great audio books. Wonderful Sci-Fi/fantasy. What I like the most is the ambient sound effects for the narrative. You hear the war going on when he's describing the war. Not common. Its ususually just the guy reading the book in a sound booth.

Martin's brilliant, juxtaposed wordplay, sly commentary, and hilarious observations are delivered with such a droll wit that only a dead person will avoid unabashed laughter. Geroge Carlin - When Will Jesus Bring The Pork Chops?



There's no better way to enjoy one of Carlin's books than to hear him read it himself. With his gravelly voice, Carlin sounds like a foul-mouthed, grumpy grandfather as he riffs on everything from politics and the improper use of language to plane-boarding etiquette and the differences between the sexes. He's alternately crude ("Every evening at seven-thirty, citizens and consumers get a chance to sound off and air their complaints. Don't miss Blow It Out Your Ass!...") and outrageously funny (such as when he compares people of faith to UFO believers), and he's always irreverent ("A children's museum sounds like a good idea, but I would imagine it's not very easy to breathe inside the little glass cases"). The one topic that gets under his skin is euphemisms and, related to that, political correctness: "I can remember when I was young that poor people lived in slums. Not anymore. These days, the economically disadvantaged occupy substandard housing in the inner cities. It's so much nicer for them." Needless to say, Carlin has his comic timing down pat. His energetic reading is punctuated by conversational bits ("Hah? Whaddya think? Maybe?") and enhanced by his deft vocal variation (such as when he's narrating the "Continuing Story of Mary & Joseph"), making listeners will feel as if they've got a front-row seat at one of his comedy shows.

Pace, diction, and dialect are all right on target. His ability to paint word pictures of the tense confrontations between good and evil adds much to the listening experience. Although a bit farfetched, this well-balanced, fast-paced story makes it difficult to leave the audio player.

As much as I like Christopher Hitchens, I tried twice to listen to this audiobook and found it extremely dry. I think it's his intellectual way of reading that makes you lose interest.

Rant : An Oral Biography of Buster Casey - Chuck Palahniuk



Buster Casey, destined to live fast, die young and murder as many people as he can, is the rotten seed at the core of Palahniuk's comically nasty eighth novel (after Haunted; Lullaby; Diary; etc.). Set in a future where urbanites are segregated by strict curfews into Daytimers and Nighttimers, the narrative unfolds as an oral history comprising contradictory accounts from people who knew Buster. These include childhood friends horrified by the boy's macabre behavior (getting snakes, scorpions and spiders to bite him and induce instant erections; repeatedly infecting himself with rabies), policemen and doctors who had dealings with the rabies "superspreader"; and Party Crashers, thrill-seeking Nighttimers who turn city streets into demolition derby arenas. After liberally infecting his hometown peers with rabies, Buster hits the big city and takes up with the Party Crashers. A series of deaths lead to a police investigation of Buster (long-since known as "Rant"—the sound children make while vomiting) that peaks just as Buster apparently commits suicide in a blaze of car-crash glory. This dark religious parable (there's even a resurrection) from the master of grotesque excess may not attract new readers, but it will delight old ones

Pygmy - Chuck Palahniuk



Palahniuk's 10th novel (after Snuff) is a potent if cartoonish cultural satire that succeeds despite its stridently confounding prose. A gang of adolescent terrorists trained by an unspecified totalitarian state (the boys and girls are guided by quotations attributed to Marx, Hitler, Augusto Pinochet, Idi Amin, etc.) infiltrate America as foreign exchange students. Their mission: to bring the nation to its knees through Operation Havoc, an act of mass destruction disguised as a science project. Narrated by skinny 13-year-old Pgymy, the propulsive plot deconstructs American fixtures, among them church (religion propaganda distribution outlet), spelling bees (forced battle to list English alphabet letters) and TV news reporters (Horde scavenger feast at overflowing anus of world history), before moving on to a Columbine-like shooting spree by a closeted kid who has fallen in love with the teenage terrorist who raped him in a shopping mall bathroom. Decoding Palahniuk's characteristically scathing observations is a challenge, as Pygmy's narrative voice is unbound by rules of grammar or structure (a typical sentence: Host father mount altar so stance beside bin empty of water), but perseverance is its own perverse reward in this singular, comic accomplishment

A generation after a global nuclear war, Louisiana is a fetid, sullen landscape of impenetrable swamps and grotesquely mutated wildlife. Above the gnarled bayous, radioactive red dust clouds race across the sky on nuclear winds; below, thick mud sucks at a man's boots. Now and then a biting acid rain falls, swept in on the boiling winds from the Gulf.

If there's any book that probably doesn't translate well into an audiobook, this has to be it. The book only has about a dozen lines - it's gotta take around 90 seconds to read the entire thing out loud.
